Sumilao Update: Metro Manila Leg - Day 15

As I arrived at the College of the Holy Spirit, the Sumilao farmers and their counsels were wrapping up to finalize their stand regarding the Executive Order that GMA issued. I found out later that the EO amounted to nothing, it was hollow. As I watched their lawyers file out of the conference room, I sensed that victory once again eluded the farmers. I later found out that the EO was nothing to to rejoice about.

Many friends have actually foreseen this but I remained hopeful that some unseen hand would prove them wrong. It seems that GMA had found a way to squirm out of the sticky situation. It was a small step if you ask me as the EO is full of loopholes which SMFI could exploit. The order lacks the cease and desist order which would prevent SMFI from continuing their constructions. Work can then proceed while SMFI fights it out in court. Meanwhile, the farmers will still have nothing.

The farmers will be walking back to the DAR at 3AM tomorrow. The real fight has just begun and they have decided to make a stand. They are ready for the long haul. Nothing can demoralize them now. Nothing is impossible for them. As the farmers often say, "lahat ay walking distance". (Everything is within walking distance)

I am astounded at the display of strength these farmers have. In their simplicity and their continuing hope. They have endured everything just to get here, nothing will stop them now. Information has reached me that they have consulted with the CBCP and that Cardinal Rosales is unhappy with the order. I suppose its too late for that now. He should have attended the meeting and spoke his mind. The order is out and the farmers have only an empty promise to hold on to.
